A Legacy in Literacy: Marcus Garvey Academy's Library Transformation Inspires Learning and Community

Marcus Garvey Academy is celebrating a new chapter in literacy, learning, and community engagement with the grand opening of its newly renovated library. The transformation was made possible through a generous $60,000 investment from proud Detroit Public Schools Community District alumna Denise Lewis, a graduate of Mumford High School, who wanted to give back to the district that helped shape her future.

A retired real estate attorney and lifelong reader, Lewis envisioned a welcoming, student-centered space where literacy, culture, and identity come together. The renovated library now features culturally reflective books, updated digital resources, modern cataloging systems, flexible seating, and a stunning custom mural that inspires creativity and learning.

The grand opening was a special celebration of literacy and community partnerships. The mural artists who helped bring the space to life were honored to be part of the transformation, while local author Susan Wade, was recognized through the Detroit Public Schools literacy program. Wade's book, The Adventures of Roscoe the Rottweiler, can now be found in more than 200 DPSCD libraries throughout the city, including Marcus Garvey Academy.
